The
History of Applefest
Applefest
was conceived in 1975 by the downtown
businesses looking for a way to
promote the Brighton
area and the apple production in the area. It
began in a small way with a few
tables consisting mainly of church
groups selling baked goods, coffee
and tea.
Like
all good things the Brighton Applefest
gradually grew
to become one of Ontario's premier
fall festivals. At first
there was an increase in vendors,
and during the late
70's and early 80's the Rotary, Lions,
Canadian Legion,
Kinsmen, Kinettes and the Knights
of Columbus became
involved and the parade started.
Applefest
is run by a core volunteer committee
of about
23.
The present
committee consists of representatives
from all service
clubs, SOHO, hockey, curling, ice
skating clubs, the
Municipality and the Chamber of Commerce.
Funding
comes from a Municipal grant.
During
the years guests have included,
Brook McNab
(CJOG), Eddie Shack, Madame Benoit,
Max Keeping (CJOH),
The Golden Helmets (OPP Motorcycle),
Lincoln
Alexander, Roy Bonisteel, Mike Anscombe
(Global) Dave
Duvall (CTV), Vicki Sonohara and
Jayna Hefford.
The
Ecumenical service which is held
on the Thursday evening prior to
the start of the three day event
started in the local high school
and then moved to local churches.
It is held at a different church
each year.
While
the format Applefest remains the
same, activities are modified as
times and public interests change.
Things that remain constant however
are good fun,
entertainment, food, & music.
Past
entertainers that have appeared
at Applefest have included The
Tommy Hunter Show, The Family Brown,
Ronnie Prophet, Carol Brown, Carlton
Show Band and Oom Pa Pah Bands.
While
the original Applefest consisted of a small number of vendors
on the main street, it has now expanded to include the entire
town and is a major Ontario fall event. This includes the
Saturday Street
Fair with over 151 vendors and a Parade on Main St, a Car
Show at Brighton
Public School Grounds, Kinsmen
Pancake Breakfast at the Lions Hall, weekend long Juried Art
Show, and
Sunday craft show and entertainment at King Edward Park.
The
two local museums, Proctor House
and Memory Junction also feature
special activities throughout
the weekend. A
full list of events is available
on the events
page.
